The Lord of the Rings trilogy would have played out very differently if the Ringwraiths pursued Frodo on their flying beasts. Why didn’t they?
Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Frodo Baggins barely escapes the Ringwraiths in the first The Lord of the Rings movie, and it's lucky the Nazgul initially pursue him on horseback — even if it raises questions about why they don't use their flying beasts. Sauron's minions have access to winged steeds, as they ride them into battle during The Two Towers and The Return of the King.
Despite the advantages of these beasts, the Ringwraiths use horses to chase Frodo in The Fellowship of the Ring. This is ultimately their downfall. Arwen is able to outpace the villains with her impressive riding abilities, getting Frodo to Rivendell before he can fall into their clutches. She calls upon the River Bruinen to block the Nazgul and their horses, preventing them from obtaining the One Ring for their master.
Gandalf, Galadriel, or Elrond discovering Sauron's advances would create obstacles for the villain, potentially hindering his rise to power. Ringwraiths descending on Frodo from the air would attract the attention of these powerful Lord of the Rings characters, as well as the rest of Middle-earth. Therefore, Sauron sends his minions to do his bidding in a less conspicuous manner. Ironically, that decision might be his biggest mistake.
What Would Happen In Fellowship In Frodo Was Chased From Above? Sauron's decision to move in secrecy brings about his downfall, as chasing Frodo from above would have ensured his success. If the Ringwraiths had pursued the Hobbits from the air, they likely would have caught them early in their journey. It's hard to say if Frodo and his friends would even have reached The Prancing Pony. Even with Strider on their side, there wouldn't be much the group could do against the Nazgul.
Needless to say, Frodo would have met an untimely end if the Nazgul took an aerial approach in The Fellowship of the Ring. With Gandalf trapped by Saruman, there's no one who could have helped him escape. For the sake of The Lord of the Rings movies, it's a good thing the Ringwraiths start out on horseback. Otherwise, Sauron would have wrapped up the story very quickly.
