TurningRed director Domee Shi explains why Mei keeps her red panda: It was important for us... because that, I think, says a lot about how the new generation embraces all of the flaws and messiness that the older generation.'

In a recent interview, Turning Red director Domee Shi explains why Mei Lee keeps her panda at the film's conclusion. In Shi's directorial feature-length debut, Turning Red hit Disney+ on March 11, 2022, quickly gaining critical acclaim and charming fans with its emotional premise. The film follows Meilin"Mei" Lee, a newly teenaged Chinese-Canadian student who transforms into a giant red panda when feeling strong emotions.

It was important for us to make Mei the first in her family to embrace the panda, because that, I think, says a lot about how the new generation embraces all of the flaws and messiness that the older generation—not even by their own choice! Like, they were almost forced to—push away in order to survive in a harsher world.

So my hope was that we weren't passing judgment on the older generation who decide to live a certain way, and we're not passing judgment on Mei either. All women can choose to embrace or get rid of their pandas.
