Heightened violence, including a rise in anti-Asian hate crimes and national attention to police brutality, have pushed people of color to seek out firearms as a form of self-protection at higher rates than ever before.

Many come from countries with high crime rates and have firsthand experience with underfunded police, she added. "It's like, 'For me to pursue my dreams, I need to make sure that I stay alive,'" Franco told Axios.
