What makes this 'Critical Role' adaptation the perfect balance of comedy and horror? Let's talk about 'The Legend of Vox Machina.'
The following contains spoilers for Episodes 1-6 of The Legend of Vox Machina.Bursting onto the scene of adult animation in an array of color and comedy, The Legend of Vox Machina stands out with its stellar voice cast and beautiful animation. Based on the first campaign of the Dungeons & Dragons web series, Critical Role, the series follows Vox Machina, a group of ragtag mercenaries and outcasts, as they attempt to pay back a bar tab and, consequently, try to save the entire realm.
In doing this, the show leaves room for the characters to continue to make jokes and have fun, keeping it primarily a comedy, while still offering the heavier topics portrayed the level of respect they deserve. It humanizes the story and characters . The characters react realistically, partially because the original media, Critical Role, involved live people making decisions based on their emotional responses to certain scenes.
In contrast, the deaths of the villagers in Episode 1 are given ample time to sink in, as were the characters themselves when Vox Machina first arrived in their village. While, like the opening adventurers, their purpose in the story is to die, it is in order to further the evolution and characterization of the members of Vox Machina. The villagers’ purpose in the story is neither comedic nor trivial, and so neither are their deaths.
A gruesome sequence of a family being slaughtered isn’t just there to make the audience gasp, it's there to make the audience gasp in horror and then realization, as it's revealed the only surviving member has been the group’s gunslinger the whole time, and he’s about to face the people that changed his life irrevocably.
