The Barbie movie includes a plethora of Barbies and Kens, but there's only one Allan. We break down the reasons behind why Allan stands apart.

Greta Gerwig’s Barbie boasts a plethora of Barbie and Ken dolls, but there’s only one version of Allan — there’s a real-life explanation surrounding his lone presence in the movie. When it comes to hanging out at the beach, or having a girls night, there are plenty of Kens and Barbies to go around, but Allan Sherwood stands apart from the variety of Ken dolls in the movie. Played by Michael Cera, Allan may not be recognizable to some viewers, but the character has a long and storied history.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT The Barbie movie dips into the well of the Mattel doll’s history, bringing up the multitude of Barbies, Kens, and their friends — including Allan and Midge , Barbie’s once-upon-a-time best friend. First introduced in 1964, Mattel created Allan to be Midge’s boyfriend, and he was marketed as Ken’s bestie.

Only One Allan Appears In The Barbie Movie Because The Real Doll Was Discontinued After only a couple of years on the Barbie toy market, the Allan doll was discontinued in 1966. Allan — his name was later spelled Alan — made a reappearance in the early 90s, when married Midge, an event that was sold separately as Wedding Day Alan and Wedding Day Midge, and together under the Wedding Party Midge Gift Set.

This was also the era of the controversial Pregnant Midge, in which consumers could buy the doll with a removable belly containing the infant Nikki, while Allan appeared with three-year-old Ryan in a stroller alongside her. After that, Allan was pretty much removed from Barbie’s history, ceasing to exist — at least in doll form. While Midge would return in the 2010s, her revival had no attachment to Allan at all.

How Barbie Plays Into The History Of The Allan Doll In the Barbie movie, Allan is introduced wearing the striped shirt his doll counterpart first donned in 1964. Helen Mirren’s narrator mentions that there’s only one version of Allan, something he is quite confused about in the Barbie trailer. Gerwig’s movie leans into the history of the Allan doll by satirizing it, acknowledging the fact that there may only be one version of him because he has never been as popular as any of the Ken dolls.
