In a new guest column for Vulture, Armstrong explained why Tom was destined to become CEO during the Succession ending. The series creator says that, as early as season 2, Tom emerged as the likeliest option for CEO because "not only did the kids lack application," but for several other reasons involving timing and Tom's personality. In terms of the particulars of who might end up as CEO, since season two the idea of Tom winning out had started to glitter in the distance. Not only did the kids lack application, but also, crucially, they were arriving to this particular party at the wrong time. In the ’50s and ’60s, Murdoch could inherit and grow and thrive. Now if you weren’t a media founder, it felt more plausible for an amenable man like Tom to rise gently like a bubble of air in the tank.
Every Clue That Tom Would Become CEO In Succession It was planned by Armstrong and the show's writers for quite a while, since as early as season 2, that Tom would become CEO of Waystar. In Succession season 2, episode 2, Roman asks, "Should I be worried about Tom?" in terms of him stealing the CEO spot, and Shiv laughs at the notion.
