The Will County Board on Thursday approved putting studies to build a new bridge over the Des Plaines River Valley on hold with an option to pick them up later.

The Caton Farm–Bruce Road Regional Transportation Corridor, under study since 2001, would connect the six corners at U.S. Route 30, Gaylord Road and Caton Farm Road in Crest Hill with Cedar Road and 159th Street in Homer Glen.

The board agreed to formally pause the project by converting it to a planning and environmental linkages study, which allows the county to pick it back up. It will take about nine months to complete the paperwork required by state and federal transportation agencies, Ronaldson said. Parker said a new bridge is needed to alleviate congestion, noting she’s seen ambulances sitting in traffic on existing bridges over the Des Plaines River. Parker, who was recently reelected, said she wants to work to find creative solutions so that a new bridge may be built.

The budget includes a $1.8 million increase to the sheriff’s office, a $1 million increase to the state’s attorney’s office and a $1 million increase for the health department. The county will add 24 new positions, including 20 in the state’s attorney’s office to address impacts of the new Safety, Accountability, Fairness and Equity-Today Act, or SAFE-T Act, county officials said.

About $348,000 from the cannabis fund is allocated to the housing stabilization program, which helps reduce housing evictions and keep families from becoming homeless. Another $250,000 will support the Recovery Resource Center, which helps those who struggle with a substance use disorder find resources and services. About $250,000 will be designated to develop a scholarship program.

The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission vote Thursday on the lower Klamath River dams is the last major regulatory hurdle and the biggest milestone for a $500 million demolition proposal championed by Native American tribes and environmentalists for years. The project would return the lower half of California’s second-largest river to a free-flowing state for the first time in more than a century.
