Will Smith has resigned from the Academy following his “shocking, painful, and inexcusable actions” at the Oscars this weekend.
has resigned from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, in response to mounting controversy around him slapping“I have directly responded to the Academy’s disciplinary hearing notice, and I will fully accept any and all consequences for my conduct. My actions at the 94th Academy Awards presentation were shocking, painful, and inexcusable.
Smith concluded in the statement, “Change takes time and I am committed to doing the work to ensure that I never again allow violence to overtake reason.” The Academy’s Board of Governors is set to meet on April 18, where it’s expected that some disciplinary action will be announced; however, with those optionsSmith had previously apologized to Rock and the Academy in a statement posted to his Instagram on Monday evening. However, as more people in Hollywood and involved with the show—including hosts—spoke out against the slap in strong terms, pressure mounted on the Academy to respond accordingly.
