Plenty has been written about Trigger, a global medley of materials including Sitka spruce, African ebony, Amazonian mahogany, Brazilian rosewood and German hardware. The instrument isn’t just a guitar, it’s also an autograph book, bearing signatures from friends, peers and heroes. Nelson’s pinkie finger and ring finger have also over the years worn a horizontal void into the wood between the sound hole and the bridge, making the guitar look older than it is.
“It’s fair to bring to the forefront Willie’s talents as a guitarist,” Gibbons says. “I don’t know that it gets the level of recognition that he gets as a singer or a songwriter. But he shows extraordinary prowess as a soloist on the instrument.”
