Though potential snow totals remain up in the air, meteorologists said they have increasing confidence that an approaching arctic air mass will cause temperatures to plummet Thursday night into Friday morning.
It’s shaping up to be a white Christmas, but also a windy and dangerously cold one with blizzard conditions possible, according to the National Weather Service.Meteorologists in the agency’s Chicago office have issued a winter storm watch, which will go into effect for northern Illinois at 6 p.m. Thursday and last though 6 a.m. Saturday, the morning of Christmas Eve.
The deep freeze will be accompanied by high winds, with gusts topping 55 miles per hour, which will make things feel even colder: Wind chills could dip to 20 to 30 degrees below zero. Prepare for power outages, meteorologists said.
