Wisconsin dominated the ground game in a 24-17 win over Oklahoma State on Tuesday night in the Guaranteed Rate Bowl at Chase Field.
Wisconsin running back Chez Mellusi barreled forward, pushed for a first down and popped to his feet. His jersey stained and dirty, Mellusi turned toward his sideline and nodded in triumph as the clock ticked toward zeros.
And Wisconsin held strong late, withstanding a barrage of big plays by the Oklahoma State offense in the fourth quarter. Cornerback Cedrick Dort Jr. picked off Oklahoma State’s Garret Rangel with less than four minutes left, and Wisconsin kept the ball on the ground to run out the clock.Wisconsin’s dominance on the ground allowed it to handily control the time of possession. The Badgers had the ball for nearly 38 minutes compared to Oklahoma State’s 22.
Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy said the time-of-game differential was connected to his offense’s struggles. Wolf threw an interception in the end zone on Wisconsin’s second possession, but made precious few mistakes the rest of the way, even delivering some impressive throws from his sidearm release point.
