With deadline looming, pausing California's gas tax may fizzle out

The legislature is working on a deal with the governor's office to give a $200 tax refund to Californians making less than $125,000 or $250,000 for joint filers.

A pause on the California gas tax may not happen after all. Lawmakers are facing a Sunday deadline to pass legislation to make that happen, and, so far, the legislature seems unwilling to do that.

In March, during the height of the gas price increases, Gov. Gavin Newsom announced several proposals meant to ease the burden on Californians. Those proposals included a pause on the scheduled gas tax increase.But there has been pushback from state lawmakers. In a joint statement, Senate President pro Tempore Toni G. Atkins and Assembly Speaker Anthony Rendon said pausing the tax would hurt the state's infrastructure.

The legislature is working on a deal with the governor's office to give a $200 tax refund to Californians making less than $125,000 or $250,000 for joint filers. Newsom hadAnlleyn Venegas, spokesperson for Automobile Club of Southern California, said any proposals should ensure that funding for transportation and public transit is not affected.

"These funds are used to pay for transportation projects and services, including road repairs and improvements, addressing traffic safety problems, as well as building public traffic projects," Venegas said.
