We recognize that in addition to our role exploring how these stories affect Ohioans, we owe our readers some respite. Over the past couple of years, we’ve given prominence to content that is not so dire and depressing, writes editor Chris Quinn.
Laura Johnston and her family have been living through a big home renovation, and she's been taking readers along on the adventure through a series of light-hearted columns. It's part of our effort to offer you some breaks from the heavy cycle of news.We can’t remember a news cycle like the one we’ve seen in 2022, with stories of enormous importance occurring at a breathtaking pace. Gerrymandering. Guns. Abortion. A sitting president’s role in a coup. Cuyahoga County Council slush funds.
It’s heavy stuff, and we wonder if the weight of it has caused some to turn away, to not want to see the details. We hope not, but we also recognize that in addition to our role exploring how these stories affect Ohioans, we owe our readers some respite. Over the past couple of years, we’ve given prominence to content that is not so dire and depressing.
A little over two years ago, we moved sports columnist Terry Pluto’s column about faith to a prominent spot on the Metro cover on Sundays. No one I know in journalism is more beloved by readers than Terry. His columns on Cleveland sports teams are some of our most-read content, and he delivers his take in an accessible, non-confrontational way. But his weekly faith column truly moves people.
Our entertainment team, led by Mike Norman, came up with the idea in the past couple of years to offer a weekly newsletter about things to do. We all have busy lives, and Mike’s aim is to help people make decisions on how best to spend their leisure hours. I never know how a new newsletter will go over, but In the CLE took off quickly. When it arrives in email boxes, most people open it. It’s a great way to get your mind off of the bad news of the day and think about having some fun.
