Martin Sanchez was hours away from being released from Bayside State Prison when he was attacked in his cell, officials said.

No surveillance camera video shows the beating death of prison inmate Martin Sanchez last November at Bayside State Prison, authorities said.

Even though Duette has many years left on his current prison term, prosecutors filed a motion asking that he remain behind bars until his trial on the new charges. He’s currently serving a 15-year sentence for aggravated manslaughter and a 20-year term for conspiracy to commit murder, and his parole eligibility date is 2030.

“Two separate inmates indicated that this defendant, Mr. Duette, went into the cell and assaulted the victim,” Senior Assistant Prosecutor Elizabeth Parvin said Monday.Surveillance video from an earlier interaction between Duette and Sanchez showed them exchanging words, but no video of the fatal encounter exists, Parvin said.

The items were tested at the New Jersey State Police lab and the victim’s blood was found, the prosecutor said. DNA linked to Duette was also found on the socks and sneakers and under the victim’s fingernails, she said.
