The mother and daughter got into an argument before the fatal stabbing occurred, investigators said.
Malika Jones, of Rahway, was found guilty of aggravated manslaughter following a three-week trial, according to a release from the Union County Prosecutor’s Office. The jury deliberated for a day and a half.
During the second argument, a man who was in the apartment with the women that day told to police that he heard Inell Jones yell that her daughter had harmed herself and needed to go to the hospital, police documents said. After the stabbing, Malika Jones called 911 and told the dispatcher that her mother was unresponsive and that the stabbing was “an accident,” investigators said. She later claimed that her mother tried to hurt her.
Inell was pronounced dead at the scene and Jones was immediately taken into custody, the release stated.The younger Jones was enrolled in a dentistry program at a community college in New York after taking time off from Barnard College,. He said his client had attended a private school in Bergen County and studied dentistry at Barnard College to appease her mother, who pushed her to become a doctor.
