Illinois State Police say the three-car crash happened in the southbound lanes of I-94 around 12:30 a.m.
Initial reports say the vehicles - a blue Ford Escape, a black Ford Escape, and a beige Nissan Altima - were traveling southbound in the left lane.
The black Escape and Altima slowed down for a separate crash when the blue Escape failed to slow down in time to avoid the crash - striking the rear of the Altima which then struck the rear of the black Escape. The Altima spun out and struck the left concrete median, ISP said. The driver of the Altima, identified as 20-year-old Lataya L. Lyons of Gary, Indiana, was taken to an area hospital where she later died.
The driver of the blue Escape, a 49-year-old woman of Homewood, Illinois, was taken to an area hospital with minor injuries. She was issued a citation for driving too fast for the conditions. All southbound lanes were shut down and traffic was diverted off at 95th Street. All lanes have since reopened.
