Wordle, the seemingly simple, addictively challenging daily word game that you’re either obsessed with or wish would disappear from your social media feed, has been acquired by the New York Times.

, however, reporter Marc Tracy wrote the game would “initially” remain free to new and existing players, opening the door for the newspaper to eventually charge for it. In addition, the article said the acquisition was a reflection of the newspaper’s pursuit of 10 million digital subscriptions by 2025.

A New York Times Games subscription, which includes the daily crossword puzzle, currently costs $5 a month. It can also be added to a digital newspaper subscription for an extra 50 cents per week.launched in October and has grown exponentially since, from 90 users on Nov. 1 to “millions” of daily players now, the Times said. The object is to guess the word in six tries and then show off to your friends and followers how you did without any regard for their interest level in the result.
