We speak to composer Peter Chapman talks about scoring the series finale of WorkinMoms, his composition process, and his hopes for a WynonnaEarp revival:
The Netflix and CBC Television series Workin’ Moms recently came to a close with the finale of its seventh season. The series was created by and written by Catherine Reitman who also starred in the series. The show first premiered in 2017 on CBC Television, reaching American audiences two years later once it appeared on Netflix in 2019.
I wanted to do right by her, I really wanted to support the story in the show and bring as much emotion as I could, to match the amount of meaning that she put into it. I wouldn't say it was difficult; it was emotionally intimidating, but ultimately, it worked really well. I didn't end up having a lot of rewrites or anything; a lot of the cues were approved right out of the gate. But when there's a finale, there is a lot of pressure to deliver and bring your A-game, for sure.
Another interesting thing was [that] when he was writing that he would be listening to certain bands and certain songs, and he would really lock into the sound of a particular song as he was writing. That song would often become almost his own soundtrack to the series or the episode. A lot of these songs were often referenced in the way I would score it.
I would love to shout out on The Lake too. For some of those songs, I worked with a fantastic songwriter/producer named Alex Petkovski. She goes by FJØRA. We met a couple years ago, and she's a fantastic songwriter. I would often write stuff and then just send it to her, and what she would send back would be like, 10 times cooler than I had ever anticipated. I'd just throw her lyrics into my session, and mix it, and it would often sound fantastic.
Workin' Moms almost always starts with a drumbeat. I'll map out the scene, I'll find the tempo that will hit all the cuts and the transitions, and then it usually starts with one of the dozens, if not hundreds, of custom percussion drum kits that I've made for that show. The thing about Workin' Moms is, I'm always trying to capture a high-energy punk rock hip-hop attitude [for] those cues.
