Everson Pereira made his highly-anticipated debut on Tuesday night, flashing some of his potential at the plate and on defense in left field.
Pereira has prodigious power with an ability to drive the ball to all fields. He flashed those tools in Triple-A before Tuesday’s promotion, batting .312 with a .937 OPS in 35 games. To make sure those numbers translate to the big leagues, Boone prefaced that Pereira must continue to work at his swing selection. Those adjustments are what separate minor leaguers from major leaguers and everyday players from All-Stars.
The 22-year-old was able to impress on defense out in left field as well, checking off the first outfield assist of his career. Asked specifically about Pereira’s defense, Boone reiterated that the prospect can perform at a high level at all three outfield spots. His lane to playing time is in left right now, but there’s a chance he’ll find himself in center down the road, especially if Bader departs in free agency this winter.
