The Yankees begin their final series of the season on Friday night in Kansas City.
In this first Yankees’ season since 2016 that won’t include postseason baseball, eight of their farmhands got their feet wet in the majors, five since they gave up on the season in late August and started calling up prospects to see regular action.a 6-0 Yankees loss to the Blue Jays
Gomez, 23, is ranked the organization’s 26th-best prospect by MLB Pipeline, but was a surprise call-up from Double-A Somerset last week. The 6-foot-3, 212 pounder signed with the Yankees in July 2016 for $50,000, then pitched only 275 innings in the minors after debuting as a pro in 2017 due to arm injuries and COVID killing the 2020 season.
Gomez used five pitches in his 30-pitch debut, 15 four-seam fastballs that were in the 94-96 mph range, plus seven curves, four changeups, three cutters and one slider. Gomez thought his season was over when Somerset was eliminated from the Eastern League playoffs, but the Yankees figured it wouldn’t hurt to get him up and into a game.
Gomez was the fourth Yankees pitcher to debut in the majors this season, following Jhony Brito, Randy Vasquez and Matt Krook. Late in the season, three position players received their first call-ups — Wells and two outfielders, Everson Pereira and Jasson Dominguez.
