Rep. Byron Donalds declared his candidacy for speaker of the House Friday evening, the Washington Examiner reported.
I first wrote that Donalds should be the House speaker back in January. Apparently, I was ahead of the curve. Then, after Rep. Kevin McCarthy was ousted earlier this month, 11 days ago, once again, I wrote that Donalds should be the speaker. I will say now what I said then: He is “everything any Republican could ever want in a politician, let alone speaker of the House.
Last but not least, in the era of identity politics in which “diversity” and “representation” matter, Republicans have the opportunity to elect the first black speaker of the House in history. It’s a fact that Donalds mentioned in his post on X and one that I wrote about in January. Electing Donalds would be the next logical step of the original political party that pioneered racial equality and civil rights.
