Republican Senator Ted Cruz of Texas on Sunday criticized a measure recently introduced by an Alabama state representative that seeks to make vasectomies mandatory for certain men.
Alabama Democratic state representative Rolanda Hollis filed the vasectomy bill on Thursday. If passed, it would require every man undergo a vasectomy within one month after their 50th birthday or following the birth of their third biological child. The HB 238 bill, first mentioned by Alabama Democrats during the state's debate in 2019 on HB314, will ensure the vasectomies are undergone at the man's"own expense.
In a recent interview with AL.com, Hollis described the vasectomy bill as one that would"help with the reproductive system" and noted that she is both pro-life and pro-choice."It is to neutralize the abortion ban bill," she said."It always takes two to tango." ."I think it's absurd first of all. It's delusional for somebody to tell somebody they have to have a mandatory vasectomy," DeMarcus Furlow said.
