Yordan Alvarez returned to the Astros’ lineup Saturday, avoiding serious injury and a long-term absence after his nastyBoth men entered concussion protocol after the collision occurred during Wednesday’s win against the Mets. Peña missed the next game and returned to action in Friday’s series opener against the Angels. Alvarez was cleared a day later and batted third as the Astros’ designated hitter on Saturday.
Astros manager Dusty Baker said he plans to DH Alvarez for a couple games to be sure the slugger is OK before he plays in left field again. A miscommunication sparked the accident when Alvarez called a fly ball but Peña did not hear him. Alvarez said he felt dizzy immediately after the collision but that no other part of his body was sore. Both men suffered cuts on their mouths. While Peña stood up on his own and initially attempted to stay in the game, Alvarez remained down on the field for longer and was removed on a cart.
“After about a minute of being there, I felt a lot better,” Alvarez said. “And I did tell him that, that it felt a lot better at the moment. But again, just because of the protocols, I had to go through a lot of different things. I have all my memory and everything, never lost consciousness.” Alvarez said that after video of the collision spread online, friends, family and fans reached out to check on him. The extent of the injuries to both players turned out to be minimal, and Alvarez and Peña spent the next few days joking about it. Peña narrowly avoided another collision while in pursuit of a fly ball in Friday’s win over the Angels, when he stopped just short of running into outfielders Jake Meyers and Kyle Tucker, instead letting the hit fall.
