"Millennials and Gen Z are overall much more liberal than other adults," agrees Stella Rouse, director ofat the University of Maryland. "We can see that in this poll, looking at some of the numbers that really do coalesce around issues that you'd think of as progressive or liberal, [there’s] much more agreement than you'd see in the distribution across the general population.
"Republican young people, you can see in these numbers, are much more supportive of issues related to climate change than you would see in Republicans across the board," Rouse says. "In issues you'd think would fall along partisan lines, you do see much more of that generational identity coming into play."
Among other policies from 2020 candidates that might generate support from young people, a plan to reduce student debt was a positive for 71% of all respondents, including 62% of Republicans, 80% of Democrats, 68% of Independents, and 75% of those 18-24.moving forward should take note of youth views on two signature progressive policy ideas: Medicare for All and a climate crisis plan.
