Young people don’t trust politicians from either party and feel unmotivated to vote, with young Black voters especially lacking enthusiasm. The results should be troubling for politicians hoping to engage young voters in the 2022 midterms and beyond. Below, we dig into some of the major findings.In addition to their pessimism about the country’s future, young voters feel pessimistic about the trajectory of their own lives.
Other benchmarks in life also seem out of reach and paying bills is a challenge: Eight-three percent of respondents agreed with the statement, "My generation is so burdened by the high cost of college, student loans, rent, and medical care that it is hard to think about being financially capable of raising a family."One notable finding is how little young voters trust political institutions and how unfavorably they feel toward sitting politicians.
We also asked about their view of a handful of major politicians: President Joe Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Donald Trump, Senator Bernie Sanders, Senator Joe Manchin, and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. While young voters drove the Biden campaign to victory in 2020, 61% of those surveyed feel unfavorably toward the president, with 39% saying they “strongly disapprove.” Pelosi’s unfavorable rating sat at 63%, while Harris’s is 52%.
