More than 8 inches of snow had fallen in parts of Chicago and Cook County by 9 a.m., while the city’s official storm tally reported at O’Hare International Airport maxed out at 5 inches as of noon.

More than 8 inches of snow had fallen in parts of Chicago and Cook County by 9 a.m., while the city’s official storm tally reported at O’Hare International Airport maxed out at 5 inches as of noon, when the most recent snowfall totals were shared with National Weather Service meteorologists.

But officials think the worst of the storm has since passed. Forecasters initially said the weather system would bring two rounds of snow to the area, but Sullivan said the latest models now show “round 2″ largely missing the Chicago metro area and even points south. There will, however, be the possibility of lake effect snow along the Lake Michigan shoreline. Sullivan said that could add as much as 2 to 5 inches of snow to communities near the lake that typically experience the lake effect.

“It has snowed a fair amount since our earlier reports, but along the line of I-55 and points to the south and east, that’s where the higher amounts of snow have been reported. Anywhere from 7 to 9 inches is probably pretty common in that area. It’s a rough line we can use for the gradient, as it drops off rapidly as you go farther to the north. It’s likely in the 2- to 4-inch range, more or less, and maybe more like an inch as you get closer to the Wisconsin state line,” Bardou said.

Weather service forecasters previously posted overnight snow totals online early Wednesday and to underscore the, asked: “Can you find the snow gradient?” It was evident as communities farther south received considerably more snow, such as 7 inches in Streator and almost 5 inches in Kankakee. There had been multiple traffic collisions reported throughout the area, although there had not been reports of any fatalities. Part of Interstate 57 north in Bradley, at milepost 315 in Kankakee County, was closed after a semitrailer jackknifed, blocking all northbound lanes, according to Illinois State Police. Traffic was being diverted off I-57 onto Route 50, officials said, adding motorists should “use extreme caution in the area and expect delays.

Other Chicago-area schools and districts, particularly in the west and south suburbs, had already announced a weather-related switch to e-learning Wednesday. Those included Riverside District 96, Riverside Brookfield High School, Kirby District 140 based in Tinley Park, Orland District 135 in Orland Park and Alsip-Hazelgreen-Oak Lawn District 126.
