The park district and Special Recreation Services of Northern Lake County officially opened the new recreation center Tuesday in Waukegan, putting nearly all of their services in a central location.
Shortly before a group of Waukegan Park District special recreation students came out of their classroom to help cut the ribbon on their new facility, state Sen. Adriane Johnson, D. Buffalo Grove, said she could not wait to use the sensory room. “When this is open, don’t be surprised if you see me in the sensory room,” Johnson said. Members of an adult class at the Waukegan Park District’s new Special Recreation Center use dice in a learning experience.
Though the special recreation center is next to a park which participants can use at times, Jennifer Dumas, the manager of general and special recreation for the park district, said the outdoor play area behind the building is fenced for security. Christian Torres is a 41-year-old participant in park district special recreation activities. Mercedes Riviera, Torres’ mother, said the new facility will offer her son opportunities which were not there before. He also works at a local supermarket.
