Ruggs clocked in at an official (and impressive) 4.27 seconds. But he fell short of the 4.22-second record that Bengals wide receiver John Ross set in 2017.
Few NFL draft prospects would be disappointed with a 40-yard dash time that ranked among the best at the NFL scouting combine in the last 15 years.
Yet Alabama wide receiver Henry Ruggs III set a bar that he could not clear Thursday in Indianapolis. Ruggs clocked in at an official 4.27 seconds, tying him for the fourth-best mark since 2006. But he fell short of the 4.22-second record that Bengals wide receiver John Ross set in 2017. Ruggs entered this week saying his goal was to set the record. The 5-11, 188-pound receiver said he had previously run the 40 in 4.25 seconds but felt he could improve.
His time, which originally was clocked at 4.28 seconds, still stood as the best of any player on Thursday night, however."I feel like I bring everything," Ruggs told reporters. "I'm a play maker. I don't pride myself on just speed, I want to be a guy who does everything on the field. I'll get downfield, try to block for my teammates because I expect them to do the same for me."Alabama will hold its pro day on March 24.
