Over the last decade, MA and Ph.D. programs in the humanities have been trying to equip graduate students for multiple career paths.
The humanities-in-crisis narrative has been a regular feature of public conversation for at least half a century, but recent reports on the death of history and of the English major in publications such as The New Yorker make for anxious reading.
colleges and universities surveyed reported that they offer courses or credentials for students in public humanities. In one project in Detroit, 90% of the community partners agreed that it was a valuable asset in their city. And the NHA qualitative data suggests that students and faculty both report a new appreciation for ways that humanities knowledge is not “purely academic.” Over the last decade, M.A. and Ph.D.
