Astros outfielder/designated hitter Yordan Alvarez was named the American League Player of the Month for June, MLB announced Saturday.
In 23 June games, Alvarez slashed .418/.510/.835 with four doubles, a triple, nine HR, 28 RBI and a 1.346 OPS. He had 13 walks and 13 strikeouts in 96 plate appearances. For the month, he led the league in batting average, on-base percentage, slugging percentage, OPS and RBI. His home-run tally ranked tied for fourth in the AL.
On Thursday, Alvarez was announced as a finalist in MLB All-Star fan voting, the second phase of which concludes July 8. Alvarez currently leads voting at the designated hitter position over Angels star Shohei Ohtani.
