Carbon monoxide poisoning is reportedly the culprit.
Vincent Chiarella, a 64-year-old native of Birmingham and a Florida resident at the time of his death, was found unresponsive in his villa May 6 at Sandals Emerald Bay on Grand Exuma after complaining of feeling ill the night before. Chiarella’s wife, Donna, 65, as found alive and taken to a local hospital before being transferred to a medical facility in Florida,Michael Phillips, 68, and Robbie Phillips, 65, were also found dead at the resort.
Carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless gas that is produced by engines, stoves, grills, furnaces, fireplaces and more. Poisoning from the gas can produce flu-like symptoms including headaches, dizziness, weakness, upset stomach, vomiting, chest pain and confusion. A pathologist is expected to release the autopsy finding and toxicology report today and an investigation into the deaths is ongoing.
