Black history in the making: An interview with Kendra Gaunt paid civicnation
: Incredible organizations. What role do you think Black women have historically played in your field of technology and what role would you want them to take moving forward?: I think the role that has been played, and one I do not see us letting up on, is where we shatter limits imposed on us by any entity.
Someone I recently connected with who is actively using a platform to do just this is Ariana Waller, a global podcast host, speaker, entrepreneur, and all around innovator. A few months ago, I had a discussion on Ariana’spodcast about the journey through tech and navigating spaces that lack adequate representation. So, I can definitely say that the sense of community is deeply resonant.
As we continue to build products and services that improve people’s quality of life, it will be essential for us to bring ourselves and perspectives to whatever we do. I think we can guide intersectionality into what we create by taking the time to understand the needs and motivations of people it serves and seriously addressis behind that creation process. When this doesn’t happen, we perpetuate bias.
When you don’t have diverse identities working alongside each other to develop the technology we use, we are left far too fragmented to make meaningful impact. Bringing an intersectional lens to technology can help us surface various strategies and insights that we may not have learned of otherwise. This positions us to ensure that we are representative of all people, not just a single group.
