Walking this many steps a day cuts risk of dementia, a new study indicates.
Short brisk walks may be as helpful for warding off dementia as the often-cited but more intimidating target of 10,000 steps per day, according to a new study of nearly 80,000 UK Biobank participants published today inRegular physical activity is generally recommended as one way to reduce the risk of dementia. Prospective studies have shown that regular exercise can significantly lower the risk; conversely, sedentary older people are more likely than their more active peers to succumb.
Over a median follow-up of 6.9 years, 866 participants developed dementia. After adjusting for a for a wide range of covariates and potential confounders including age, sex, race, education, socioeconomic status, smoking, alcohol use, fruit and vegetable consumption, family history of cardiovascular disease or cancer, medication use, and sleep quality, the team found nonlinear associations between daily steps and dementia risk.
Whilst they acknowledged that the optimal step count to cut in half the development of dementia was "only nominally lower than the popular cutoff of 10,000 steps, adding weight to this widely recommended benchmark", the benefits of higher step count were attenuated, and even reversed, beyond this.Secondly, the intensity of steps mattered more than the mere volume of steps, and this observation held in analyses that also adjusted for the total number of steps.
"It is time for the management of physical inactivity to be considered an intrinsic part of routine primary care visits for older adults.", Dr Llwyd Orton,
