I can’t imagine a life without pollution or sea levels rising.” Bastida attributed this belief to a common saying in her community. “The youth run the fastest, but the elders know the path,” Bastida said.“I came to environmentalism because I understood that my Black ancestors made the blueprint for what environmentalism is now,” Thomas said. “There’s no need to reinvent the wheel because there’s so many amazing activists doing the work.”
