PLNU fall 9-6 to Azusa, stays on field for Wednesday night's late elimination game vs. Fresno Pacific; Aztecs, Toreros, Tritons all hit road in conference play
Point Loma Nazarene’s road to the PacWest championship took a detour Thursday evening, when the top-seeded Sea Lions lost 9-6 to second-seeded Azusa Pacific in a winners’ bracket game at the conference tournament.
Meanwhile, PLNU stayed on the field for Wednesday night’s late elimination game against host Fresno Pacific , which defeated Holy Names 7-6 earlier in the day.The Sea Lions now need three straight wins — one against Fresno Pacific and then two straight against Azusa Pacific — if they are to claim the championship.
Azusa added a run in the fifth and three more in the eighth for a comfortable 9-3 lead heading into the ninth inning. But PLNU rallied once more, scoring three runs in the ninth and bringing the tying run to the plate before Azusa’s Jake Vargas closed it out.The first-place Aztecs travel to second-place Air Force with an eye on clinching a spot in the four-team Mountain West Tournament. SDSU needs two wins to secure a berth in the double-elimination tournament that will be hosted by Fresno.
Air Force has succeeded with an offense that ranks second in the MW in batting average and scoring , despite its pitching being last in ERA , opponent batting average and home runs allowed .The Toreros conclude the regular season at Saint Mary’s needing one win to clinch a spot in the six-team West Coast Conference Tournament. USD has next week off for finals before the double-elimination tourney begins the final week in Las Vegas.
