We chat with director David Prior about Guillermo del Toro's CabinetofCuriosities, his love of 'The Autopsy' short story, and TheEmptyMan's release:
Some bodies are more than meet the eye, as seen in the "The Autopsy" installment of Guillermo del Toro's Cabinet of Curiosities. Based on Michael Shea's short story of the same name, the episode sees a coroner brought in to do the autopsies of several miners who died when one of them set off an explosion with a mysterious object, only to learn of the surprising truth behind him.
David Prior on Cabinet of Curiosities Screen Rant: I'm very excited to talk about Cabinet of Curiosities, it was a wonderful anthology through and through, I loved each and every installment. That's what I keep hearing from everybody! I love that Guillermo del Toro handpicked everybody for all of these stories.
I'm glad he was able to do that for you and everybody else involved with the project. With your installment, were you familiar with the source material prior to Guillermo presenting it to you, or was this your first time getting into it? David Prior: Well, Guillermo has this amazingly talented gaggle of carny folk and draft dodgers up in Toronto who kind of just execute his visions, they worship him like some ancient, magnificent pagan god. At some point, he knew that he was going to do this episode, and he'd already had a lot of design stuff. They hadn't built anything yet, but they had done a lot of design work.
I also love the design of the alien itself, and I know that Guillermo is very much about the practical, and it seems like everybody I've talked to across the board has talked about the practical effects that went into it. What was it like to work with the effects artists to really bring that creature to life for this episode?
