A glitch on X, formerly known as Twitter, could have opened a can of worms for the Central Intelligence Agency had an ethical hacker on the microblogging website not sprung to action.is linked to the agency’s Telegram channel, which invites intelligence and information from individuals in countries with no access to other social media or independent media, specifically from Russians.
The problem began when the link ‘https://t.me/securelycontactingcia’ was automatically shortened to ‘https://t.me/securelycont.’ X automatically makes a URL shorter to save character space or to track how many times a link has been clicked. As the shortened channel name appeared on the CIA's X account, people clicking on the link were being redirected to the non-CIA channel. The channel ‘securelycont’ was unused and unclaimed.could have been forwarded to this duplicate channel. This was a major security breach and was first noticed by ethical hacker Kevin McSheehan, who was amazed by the fact that the CIA hadn't noticed it..
The agency added a link to Tor, a software that hides a user’s IP address and browsing activity by redirecting web traffic through a series of different routers. The Tor browser enables users to have access to the dark web. While the dark web is the home ground of many illicit and illegal activities, it's also a source for transferring information from countries that have strict internet censorship.
