For manufacturers, that means saving up to 20 percent on firing temperatures by replacing clay with waste materials in brick production.

Engineers at RMIT University have developed energy-efficient bricks that can reduce electricity bills by 5 percent.

They made bricks in a lab that were similar to the ones made in real factories. The process started with the pulverizer that was used to smash the clay soil to the required size. Then, to remove moisture, clay and RCF wastes were dried for 24 hours. The next steps included mixing it with a defined amount of water and compaction process.

Their focus was also on the economic benefits of using RCF waste in brick production and on the reduction of CO2 emissions. The bricks made from RCF waste have 24 percent lower thermal properties than regular bricks. As noted, they need 10 percent lower temperature to fire. That means $158,460 saved by preventing 417 tonnes of CO2 emissions.
