The proposed regulations, governing both volunteer and career fire departments, may lead to an increase of 2.5 times to the number of hours required for basic firefighter training, changes to firefighter medical screenings and other mandates. FASNY says the changes would significantly increase the costs of providing fire protection, and communities may need to shut down volunteer fire departments and increase property taxes to comply with the rules.
