"[The women] have been denied necessary and potentially life-saving obstetrical care because medical professionals throughout the state fear liability under Texas's abortion bans," according to a copy of the suitThe Center for Reproductive Rights filed the petition in state court on behalf of the women and two doctors. The New York-based legal organization is expected formally unveil the legal challenge at a press conference Tuesday in Austin.
The petition doesn't ask the Texas court to throw out the state's multiple abortion bans. Instead, it asks the judge to determine whether doctors can provide abortion care in situations where pregnancy threatens the health of a woman or when the fetus is unable to survive outside the womb.
