Eight signs are being changed from “Fort Hood” to “Fort Cavazos” at the massive Army post in Killeen. The renaming of the post to Fort Cavazos is for Army 4-Star General Richard E. Cavazos who last resided in San Antonio until his death at the age of 88.
Fighting against American troops, the native Kentuckian suffered catastrophic defeats outside Atlanta and later at Nashville, his men falling by the thousands. Earlier, at Antietam, he lost half of his men. His division also suffered heavy losses at Gettysburg. What might have made sense then seems much less compelling today. Hood and his Confederate compatriots need to be remembered — as does the war itself — but they don’t deserve to be honored.Jamie Malanowski wrote
