With a dramatic seventh-inning turn, O’Connor erased a one-run deficit and pushed two...

O'Connor Panthers raise their State Championship trophy after the 7-6 win against the Lake Ridge Eagles at the bottom of the seventh inning at the Class 6A State Championship softball playoff on Saturday, June 4, 2022, at Red & Charline McCombs Field in Austin, TX.

The Panthers trailed the Eagles 6-5 heading into the bottom of the seventh before senior second baseman Jada Munoz tied it up with a solo shot to left field to lead off the frame. O’Connor then loaded the bases with two walks and a single. Senior left fielder A.J. Sanchez then stepped in and eyed a 3-1 pitch go high and outside to the catcher’s mitt forcing senior first baseman Ella Gonzales from third with the championship run.

Munoz came up clutch in the 6A semifinals the day before when her two-run homer in the fourth inning was the difference in the Panthers’ 7-5 victory against El Paso Americas. Munoz, signed with McNeese, was named the championship game MVP. The Panthers finished the year 32-1 and won 27 in a row to end the season. O’Connor’s state title was not only the first softball crown in Northside ISD history, but it was only the second for the San Antonio area in UIL’s highest classification .
