Hamas postpones the release of Israeli hostages, accusing Israel of breaching the ceasefire agreement and obstructing the return of displaced Palestinians. Tensions escalate as Israel prepares for possible scenarios in Gaza.
A Hamas spokesperson announced on Monday that the militant group would postpone the release of the next group of Israel i hostages originally scheduled for this Saturday. This announcement jeopardizes the fragile ceasefire between Israel and Hamas . Abu Obeida, the military spokesperson for Hamas ' Al-Qassam Brigades, accused Israel of violating the terms of the hostage release agreement.
He claimed that Israel is hindering the return of displaced Palestinians to the northern Gaza Strip, subjecting them to shelling and gunfire, and preventing the entry of essential relief supplies as stipulated in the deal.In response, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz condemned the Hamas announcement, describing it as a clear breach of both the ceasefire agreement and the hostage release deal. He instructed the country's military to maintain the highest level of readiness for any potential scenario in Gaza and to prioritize the protection of Israeli communities. A group advocating for the release of all hostages, the Hostages and Missing Families Forum, urgently appealed for assistance from mediating countries to restore and effectively implement the existing agreement. They expressed their support for the Israeli government and urged the continuation of the conditions necessary to secure the freedom of all remaining hostages. So far, 16 Israeli hostages have been released in exchange for over 670 Palestinian prisoners and detainees freed from Israeli jails. Five Thai hostages, who were working in Israel as agricultural laborers and were not part of the initial agreement, were also released. The next phase of the agreement was expected to involve the release of additional hostages for further prisoner exchanges and a subsequent withdrawal of Israeli troops from Gaza. The ceasefire, which began on January 19, was facilitated by Trump's Middle East envoy, Steve Whitkoff, who played a critical role in persuading Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to accept the initial phase. However, Netanyahu's far-right allies have threatened to destabilize the government if Israel does not resume hostilities in Gaza and eliminate Hamas rule.Hamas has consistently accused Netanyahu of creating obstacles in the negotiations. Netanyahu and his allies, in turn, have accused Hamas of demanding alterations to already agreed-upon terms. The United States, alongside Egypt and Qatar, is actively involved in mediating the talks. Secretary of State Marco Rubio is scheduled to visit Israel and key Arab states—Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates—this week, according to the State Department. President Trump's proposal to have the U.S. assume control of Gaza and relocate the nearly 2 million Palestinian inhabitants elsewhere has been met with strong opposition from Hamas' leadership in Gaza and the Palestinian Authority in the West Bank. This proposal has also been rejected by regional leaders and numerous U.S. allies. The majority of the hostages on the list of 33 were among the over 250 individuals captured during the Hamas-led attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, which triggered the war in Gaza. According to Israeli officials, approximately 1,200 Israelis were killed in the Hamas attack, while health officials in the Gaza enclave reported that over 47,000 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza.
