Zombies and ghouls won’t be roaming downtown Elgin this Halloween; the Elgin City Council has canceled the popular event for a third straight year.

Acting on a recommendation from Special Events Coordinator Kate O’Leary, the council voted 4-3 Wednesday night to postpone the festival until next year due to the $500,000 price tag and the uncertainty of the coronavirus pandemic.

“This is not the end of Nightmare on Chicago Street,” City Manager Rick Kozal said. Planning for next year will begin immediately “to bring it back with the same level of success the city has been able to accomplish in past years,” he said. “It will be back in some shape or form.” Additionally, postponing the fest would give the city time to complete a study on its special events, which is currently underway, O’Leary said.“I’m begrudgingly going to accept your recommendation,” Dixon said. “I was concerned about the cost, but I did want this event to happen. The reasoning why it isn’t going to happen is very sound and overall, very reasonable.”
