Whether the poster issue continues to percolate at Lake Central High School is yet to be seen.
At October’s Lake Central School Board meeting, students and parents packed the room to express their support behind a classroom poster that Dr. Larry Veracco ordered removed — and any others espousing “political speech.”As the poster read: “In this classroom we believe science is real. Black Lives Matter. Love is love. Feminism is for everyone. Humans are not illegal. Kindness is everything.
“It’s important for us not to waste scarce resources,” he explained in regard to any potential legal battle. “We’ve tried to make the best decision we can based on what the experts tell us.” He added that he understood the sentiments expressed at the October board meeting, but hoped students, parents and teachers could understand why the administration made the decision about removing the poster.
Lux said he found Rokita’s opinion narrow in that it only references the “Black Lives Matter” political organization and not the other sentiments expressed on the poster, such as the support for LGBTQ+ individuals. He described Rokita’s opinion in and of itself as “political speech.” Accordingly, Lux does not believe the poster should be considered political or religious speech. He believes that hate speech is clearly discernible.
