Opinion | Letters: Quit using scare tactics when it comes to Alito’s draft
“Alito’s draft will target the LGBTQ community next,” May 8 commentary
The strategy seems clear. Needlessly and falsely scare people and incite outrage — repealing Roe will not ban abortion but will subject this divisive issue to each state’s voters, rather than nine unelected justices, as it is in European democracies — in order to demonize conservatives who believe the unborn deserve protection and seize even more political power.
It is sickening that we have this kind of a judge on the highest court in the United States of America. If men had to bear children, how different things would be. Think about it, and stand up!As the medical director at Horizon Pediatrics in Thornton in 2012, I recruited Dr. Yadira Caraveo, who was finishing her residency in New Mexico, to join our primary care pediatric practice. Caraveo worked with us until 2014 when she left to join Peak Pediatrics.
Many wells are fracked more than once. The water used for fracking is not returned to the global water system as it is considered contaminated by “trade secret” chemicals.Re: “We need to make water-wise choices,” May 8 letter to the editor This will reduce pressure on Denver and other Colorado cities to make major changes to water usage patterns.Re: “Yes, we should cancel student debt, but only for some,” May 8 commentary
4. What about the student who selects a lower-paying service career, i.e., teaching. Shouldn’t that student get preference in repayment amounts? Currently the residents of Denver pay the city $25 million to remove our trash and recycling. This pays for trash removal employees, trash trucks, truck maintenance, gasoline and dump fees. Now we learn that our council wants to charge a separate fee in addition to taxes that already are allocated for this service. And then we are told that these new fees, $35 million, will be used only to cover the cost of waste services. In my book that would amount to $60 million total for waste removal.
But Denver needs to decide: Either keep property taxes at today’s level and put the trash tax to a vote, or reduce property taxes so the effect of monthly trash payments is revenue-neutral.Re: “Not in our town,” May 8 news storyThe San Luis Valley has a very old and very proud agriculture tradition. It turns out that cannabis is more water-intensive than most food commodity crops. It also uses large amounts of fertilizer, pesticides and other poisons .
Perhaps these so-called “leaders” might want to redirect their suspicions of crimes committed in Denver’s parks to criminals? And might these same “leaders” demand all criminals stop carrying guns in Denver’s parks? For all the good that would/will do. Thank you for publishing the poignant, practical article about keeping hope alive as we face difficult work. It was the perfect Mother’s Day gift for me this year. I am the mother of two grown sons, who I love more than anything. Because of them, I volunteer my time and energy building bipartisan support for durable climate solutions so my boys will have a better future.
The truth is that a traditional bluegrass, fescue or rye lawn, if allowed to go dormant with mottled brown patches and weeds in the summer heat, can be fairly water-conserving. There is nothing wrong with a stressed lawn in July and August. Indeed when I visit England’s city parks in late summer, that is much of what I see, stressed lawns. Even with their generous precipitation they don’t have a problem with large brown patches. We here in dry Colorado somehow do. Go figure that.
How can we not have a crisis of this proportion? The trauma that our children have to face on an ongoing basis is not normal. Refer back to Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs for individual motivation: The first is basic food and clothing, and the second is safety. My guess is the proportion of these unmet needs in our society today reflects a similar proportion ending up in today’s emergency rooms.
Imagine the delight of homeowners knowing Gov. Jared Polis has recognized that $274 will allow people to remain in their homes. It’s apparent that he was born with a gold spoon in his mouth!St. Joseph Church, at the corner of 6th Avenue and Galapago, was built in 1888. It was added to the National Register of Historical Places in 1982 .
We encourage the people of Denver to praise History Colorado and the State Historical Fund, not only because of these particular grants, but for the more than $7 million spent to preserve and restore more than 5,000 historic buildings plus bridges and other places having historical beauty created by talented Colorado artisans of the past.
It is hard to believe that every single gas station here in Colorado has their prices “stuck” at the same high rate even though the price of crude oil has dropped several times recently and continues to fluctuate.Re: “Fatal encounters: Riding a bike in America should not be this dangerous,” May 1 commentary

What Would Alito’s Draft Opinion Mean for Women’s Rights? The Alito opinion in Dobbs v. Jackson fails to mention how lack of access to abortion might disrupt education, employment or other aspects of women’s lives—giving America a glimpse into a dystopian future where the Constitution would offer no protection for women’s rights because they are not “deeply rooted in the country’s history and traditions.”If Alito has his way, the police and politicians could very likely once again be searching our bedrooms for those telltale signs of illegal sexual behavior.
