he took an interest in politics after joining the presidential campaign of former U.S. Sen. Bill Bradley, a Democrat from New Jersey who ran against former Vice President Al Gore during the 2000 presidential primaries. After that campaign ended, his website says, Lurie moved to New York City to work for a “poverty-fighting organization” and began his new job in an office near the World Trade Center just days before the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks.
“Returning home to the Bay Area, he saw another tragedy unfolding on the streets of San Francisco — one in four people too poor to meet their basic needs and an exploding homelessness, mental health, and drug crisis in a region home to one of the greatest sustained periods of wealth creation in our history,” Lurie’s campaign website says. “He witnessed a city and a region that was clearly in need of a bold new approach to confronting inequality.
Lurie’s entry into the race makes next year’s contest more complicated for Breed, a moderate Democrat who has seen her favorability rating among San Francisco voters
