Historical photos of Greater Cleveland's KmartsCLEVELAND, Ohio — Greater Cleveland had at least 40 different Kmarts at one point or another, starting in 1966. But since 2020, it has had zero.According to records compiled by historian Ben Schultz, the first Kmart in the area in Lorain opened in 1966, and closed in 1985. The last Kmart to close regionally was in Tallmadge. That store was opened in 1975 and closed on Feb. 2, 2020.

An official list of former Kmarts isn’t publicly available, but Schultz, a 23-year-old studying for a master’s in history at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, has the closest thing. He sifted through newspaper archives, government databases and old corporate documents on microfilm to compile a list of over 3,100 locations that have opened and closed since the brand’s inception.

Ohio, according to his records, had 169 different locations over the years. This included 40 in Cuyahoga and the surrounding counties — Summit, Portage, Lake, Geauga, Lorain and Medina.
