A man was arrested early Sunday after allegedly firing a gun to get a police officer's attention, authorities said.
Nichan Meguerditchian, 45, is facing several felony charges, including discharge of a firearm, following the incident that occurred in South Salt Lake on Sunday, Aug. 4. Around 12:30 a.m., an on-duty heard what sounded like gunfire in the area of 700 East Wilmington Avenue. The officer then saw a man running toward him.Shots fired after DUI suspect 'deliberately collided' with two Weber County police vehiclesMeguerditchian was taken into custody without incident. He reportedly told police he fired the weapon to attract the officer's attention.
"Discharging a firearm to get an officer's attention is incredibly dangerous," Salt Lake City Police Chief Mike Brown said in a statement. "This situation could have ended tragically."During the investigation, officers allegedly discovered drug paraphernalia in Meguerditchian's vehicle. Meguerditchian was booked into Salt Lake County Metro Jail. The case will be reviewed by the district attorney's office.
