The first firefighters arrived and made their way up to the ninth floor and found that the apartment was completely engulfed, Smith said. It was then that they found the man.
A woman who lived in the apartment said she’d been gone only a few minutes when the fire broke out, Smith said.
A spokesperson for the Lake County Coroner’s Office said Friday that the office was waiting for a DNA comparison or dental records before releasing the man’s identity. He was pronounced dead at 6:40 a.m. Thursday, according to a release. Fourteen residents have been displaced because of smoke and water damage to their apartments, he said, and only the man’s apartment and the one directly above it were destroyed.
“The building’s made of concrete, so the fire stayed contained for the most part,” Smith said. “If it had been a wooden-framed building, the outcome would have been a lot different.” Firefighters from Hammond’s Central station and Stations 1, 2 and 7 responded, Smith said, and it took two hours to extinguish the fire.
